2008 Ford MUSTANG GT500, Shelby Super Snake only 52,000 km! -Ford GT aluminum engine

Thirty-five years after the Shelby Mustang program was discontinued in the late 1960s, Carroll Shelby and Ford made a big announcement at the 2005 New York International Auto Show: the Shelby GT500 was returning for 2007.

Standing next to a bright red prototype with the famous Le Mans stripes, Shelby beamed as the spotlight returned to the legendary alliance between Shelby and Ford. It was no secret that Ford SVT had been working on a high-performance Cobra model for the updated and retro-styled Mustang S197, which was introduced as a 2005 model.

With Shelby on board, however, the Cobra name, which SVT had used intermittently since 1993, was replaced by the Shelby GT500, one of the most iconic names in Mustang’s rich history. To give the new GT500 a Shelby look, SVT designers went back to the 1968 Shelby and gave the new model a more aggressive front grille, rear spoiler, and beautiful stripes, both LeMans-style and GT-style on the lower sides of the body.

The offset Cobra snake on the grille and the "SHELBY" lettering on the trunk confirmed the heritage. In the 1960s, the Shelby was the ultimate performance Mustang. The same was true for the new GT500, only this time modern technology took the Shelby to new heights.

It started under the hood with a 32-valve 5.4-liter V8 topped by an Eaton screw supercharger with intercooler. With 500 horsepower, it was the most powerful production Mustang yet. SVT upgraded the GT500 for both on-road excitement and track assault with a six-speed manual transmission, race-tuned suspension, massive Brembo brakes and 19-inch aluminum wheels in a 10-spoke nod to historic Shelby .

SVT described the unique interior as "sophisticated" with leather upholstery, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and brushed aluminum instrument panels. The Shelby GT500 was a marketing and sales success for Ford. The high-performance, top-of-the-line Mustang gave the Mustang lineup a much-needed halo. GT500 sales in 2007 approached 11,000 units, a remarkable feat for a specialty car. Ford sold nearly 23,000 GT500s in the 2007-09 model years. With few changes from the GT500 during its first three years, SVT took advantage of the 2010 Mustang sheetmetal update to refresh the Shelby GT500 with a new front and rear grille style, revised suspension tuning, an improved six-speed transmission, and a 3.55:1 rear axle (up from the previous 3.31:1). It borrowed cold-air induction from the limited-production 2008 GT500KR, and the turbocharged 5.4-liter engine's output jumped to 540 horsepower.
