Hardening the aluminum alloy through heat treatment provides greater strength. Working with aluminum alloy also allows designers to increase thickness if needed to achieve extra strength without increasing weight. The stronger F-series weighs up to 317 kg less than the previous generation, resulting in a higher power-to-weight ratio, better fuel efficiency, plus available payload in its class.

V8 diesel engines deliver their power through an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. Compared to a 6-speed, the 10-speed transmission delivers improved overall performance with increased acceleration in the low and mid-range. Features include optimized wide-spread gear ratios, drag reduction and three-speed transmission. Plus, you can choose from selectable modes: Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, EcoSelect and Sport. ENGINE BRAKE. The 6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel engine features a driver-activated engine and exhaust brake. It restricts the flow of turbocharger exhaust to create backpressure and slow the vehicle, providing better control when descending hills, regardless of vehicle load or road GRADE. Also, because engine braking helps minimize the need to depress the pedal, brake fade and pad wear are reduced, reducing maintenance costs. There are three settings: On, Off and Auto. The Auto setting modulates engine braking as needed and helps maintain the desired speed based on accelerator and brake pedal use.

The fully "box" frame is made with more solid steel (up to 78%) and larger cross-sections than the previous generation frame. And while this frame is stronger and stiffer, it's also up to 27kg lighter, as many components are made using a state-of-the-art rolling process that minimises weight.
