Built-in checkweigher

The Weigh Safe Aero Hitch is the one and only towing device with a built-in scale that signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in much safer and more fun towing. Before this ball mount, measuring the weight of your trailer tongue was a problem. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weighing station, or buy a separate tongue scale. But with Weigh Safe's built-in scale, measuring the weight of your tongue is as easy as attaching a trailer to a ball mount. Simply attach your trailer to the Weigh Safe ball mount just like any other ball mount. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on the internal hydraulic piston that sits on the oil bed. When the piston drops into the oil, a pressure reading is sent to the scale.

What is tongue weight and why is it important?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the ball of the towing vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent—and should not exceed 15 percent—of your total trailer weight. For example, a 10,000 lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lb and 1,500 lb. You can adjust the weight of the trailer by removing or adding cargo or by redistributing the cargo on the trailer. The weight of the tongue should not exceed the load capacity of your towing vehicle, your towing equipment or any of your towing components.

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause the trailer to sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have trouble steering, gaining traction, or braking when you drive an assembly that puts too much pressure on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with the wrong tongue weight can cause a loss of vehicle control or cause the trailer to separate from the vehicle.
